I like this interview with Tom Hiddleston (I’m still climbing down from the high from The Night Manager). Particularly his answer to the interviewer’s “checklist”. The actor is always unapologetically profound in his replies, at least in the interviews I’ve watched. Like with The New York Times alongside Hugh Laurie in which both actors dissected their characters’ psyches.
But more than this, watching the interview made me think about Philippine contemporary cinema and the pool of actors we have these days. There are the remaining few who can intelligently expound on their characters but more often than not this is not forthcoming from the majority. Good acting comes from understanding of character which then inspires portrayal, science and art which effective actors strive to hone continuously. Why should they? For the sake of their art and for their own satisfaction, I guess. And their paying public, of course.
