Movies: Fifty Shades of Grey

The movie came off somewhat bland, overall.  Over at Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is given a general rating of 24% and 47% for audience likeability.

The main character played by Jaimie Dornan lacked the powerful presence and bad-assness that are Christian Grey’s compelling qualities.  CG as the privately-tormented man able to channel this well toward his business and so-called hobbies and as one lacking the ability to connect emotionally with the women in his life were not clearly evident in the portrayal. But, to be fair, Dornan has quite a stylish presence.  He carried his suits well, an important CG trademark.

Dakota Johnson as Ana, on the other hand, really looked like the character and played her well although Dakota could’ve given more if her co-star Dornan had given more.  As the review in Rolling Stone put it

(Dakota) plays all this silliness as if she means it. She’s the one bright spot in a film that deals with sex by removing the joy of it… (she) gives Ana a core of feisty intelligence the book never hinted at.  Sadly, costar Dornan, an Irish model-turned actor gives her a brick wall to act with.

As a couple on screen, the tandem lacked that fire that should’ve made moviegoers scream like crazy. Think Twilight‘s Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

A Part II is obviously up next and hopefully it’d be a more worthy watch.
