A fine example of a gentleman salesman

In this scene in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Paul,  after receiving  from Holly ribbon for his typewriter, endeavors to reciprocate the gesture, but he only has ten dollars in cash and a cheque, his first from his publisher. Holly tells him she’d accept a gift from him on the condition that it’s ten dollars or less.  They go to her favorite place, Tiffany’s.

There, a salesman attends to them…

For me, the humor in the story is, sales people who want to get that commission do not endeavor to be gentlemen (or, ladies). Maybe, a gentleman hustler?
