I am drawn to trees with character. Knotted and gnarly trees. Ancient trees. Trees you don’t see often. Like this Dap-Dap, at least that’s what the locals said its name is.
In a barrio, officials walked me around their village as part of a scheduled observation tour, and on the shore I noticed this tree among the coconuts. You know rare when you see one. My hosts confirmed my gut feel and told me that at night its fruits – tiny round lime greens and almost transparent – glow like fairy lights. Many times, they continued, the fishermen from the village were guided back to shore by these.
