When loyalty means sitting down

Did Filipino soccer fans just make a faux pas when they gave David Beckham a standing ovation after he scored a goal for Galaxy?  Incredible.  Who in the soccer fandom would give an ovation to the captain of a rival team on home soil?  Soccer fans would shed blood for their national teams, yet there we were standing up and showing off our misplaced loyalty.  Has anyone for instance seen English fans watching a match on home soil give a standing ovation to say a player from the German team?  Only in da Philippines, as they say.  (On the side, whenever Paquiao has a fight I’m aghast that fellow Filipinos would ask me whose side I’m on, like was I Team Paquiao or Team Morales?  My rule is always support your national team or athlete. No exception.)  I bet Beckham, behind his gentlemanly acknowledgment of the cheers, was shocked to receive the ovation.
